Portico di Romagna: the door to Tuscany

The ancient borough is one of the door of the National Park of Foreste Casentinesi and Monte Falterona, one of the hugest park in Italy, with a very important biogenetic integral reserve, untouched since centuries.

But, also, it is the door to Tuscany. The national street State Route 67 Tosco Romagnola is one of the most important links between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. It begins in Pisa and ends in Ravenna. The route covers a total area of approximately 230 km, of which just over 90 fall in the Emilia Romagna region Continuing after the Muraglione Pass (on the border between the two crossing regions), the SS 67 crosses the municipalities of Portico and San Benedetto, Rocca San Casciano, Dovadola, Forlì, Ravenna and reaches Marina di Ravenna.

Following the route northbound, you will cross the border of Emilia Romagna entering the little borough of San Godenzo. Then going on you will find Dicomano. You are entering Mugello, famous all over the world for the motorbike racing circuit.

Mugello is full of Medicean Villas and Castels belonged to the Medici family and to the Renaissance era as the family traced its roots back to the Mugello. For example, Park and Villa Demidoff in Vaglia, the Palazzo dei Vicari (Vicar Palace) in Scarperia, and the Villa di Cafaggiolo in Barberino di Mugello.

You are now quite near to Florence. La Rufina is exactly in the area of Chianti: vineyards and oil tree fields, design the landscape before arriving to Pontassieve where you can stop before entering Florence. Located 14 km east of Florence in the Arno valley at the point where the Sieve river flows into the Arno, Pontassieve is a good point to explore the surroundings, Fiesole for example, without staying in Florence.

An now here you are, after only 71 km, passing through a national park and its beauty, Mugello and the history of Medici and a part of the Chianti Shire with charming vineyards, you are arriving in Florence. Less than 2 hours by car or, if you are a biker, by motorbike. If you want to take a one day itinerary in Florence, Portico di Romagna is the right place to stay, or else, just choose a wine tasting at la Rufina, a place to discover and to enjoy.
